Three new updates to Google Sync for iPhone and iPad

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

(Cross-posted on the Google Mobile Blog)

We don’t have to tell you that the workforce is increasingly mobile, and that workers on the go expect to be fully productive on email and calendar from their mobile devices. But we do want to tell you that we have a few new features for Google Sync users that will help employees work efficiently from anywhere on their iPhones and iPads.

Google Sync keeps your phone’s native mail and calendar apps in sync with your Gmail, Calendar and Contacts. Today, three new updates to Google Sync for iOS will allow you to:
  • Search all your emails in Gmail, not just the emails stored locally by the iOS mail app.

  • Accept, decline or edit calendar events from the iOS calendar app.

  • Send email from the address you want. We recognize that some of you manage multiple email addresses from a single Gmail account.Gmail’s “Send Mail as” feature lets you send messages with another email address listed as the sender instead of your Gmail address, e.g. joe@altostrat.com instead of joe@gmail.com. Now the iOS mail app will respect these settings.

These three updates are available to both Gmail and Google Apps email accounts.

I've been waiting for the "Send Mail as" feature ever since I got an iPhone. How do you set up that feature when you already have your account setup on your phone? I visited m.google.com on my phone and the option is checked for "Send Mail as". The setting up google sync had setup, not change. I don't see the other emails when I compose.

This is great! Don't abandon us iOS users, Google :) We still love you!

I noticed it will send as the default account (which is awesome), but is there any way to get it to respect Gmail's "Reply from the same address the message was sent to" setting?
Mine currently does not and I have added/deleted the account and check/unchecked the option in the google sync page...

Thanks for all the hard work!

also...just another heads up...
when searching messages on the server, all my messages come up as unread (in the search) regardless of actual status on gmail (marked all my mail as read, just to check)...

WTF! After 2 years this is the only update you have come up with. How about fixing it so that you turn off archive when deleting when using google sync on the iPhone. I have had to use IMAP since I got my 3gs because of this oversight. Man this is the last straw. If this isn't fixed by the time iCloud comes out I'm leaving gMail. Which is sad because I've been using gmail since the beta first came out.

On a positive note it is nice they added searching on the server. That is nice. But seriously no fix for delete is archive. Why can't you make a toggle somewhere like you have for IMAP UGH!

I tried using the search feature, and it ended up adding found messages to my unread count in the Mail app. How can I remove this count? (I can't even view past messages from my inbox)

I would love to see the ability in Contacts to support multiple phone number types and the ability to have Custom Names for the numbers.

Does Delete actually delete the message now or do I still need to move it to the Trash folder? It would be great to at least have the option of treating Gmail like an Exchange server.

Same, what the heck? Please FIX!

Thanks, searching is great! The only thing I'd love to see is de appropiate calendar colours like in CalDAV. If that's ok I'll use Google Sync too for my calendars!

ehm, what's new? I can't remember not having the "search on server" option? and I have to setup something new to see the "send as" option? I'm not seeing it somewhere now.

How about supporting Contact sync for the tens of millions of non-Exchange Outlook users???

Great new features, but when will something be done about DELETE option when using sync.
I have to have both IMAP & sync set on my iphone!

FIX DELETE.

Is this feature also available for Google Apps users? I cannot get this to work on an Apps domain?

Please fix your implementation. When you search on the server, all messages received after the one you look at shows up as unread... Even if they have been. This is a MAJOR bug.

Um, for all the complaints about deleting, you cna do this via sync if you delete from the all mail mailbox, rather than the inbox.

"Continue Search on Server..." doesn't work for me, even though I have exchange and thus google sync maybe for years now. I actually always try it once in a while, and it never have worked. Anyone have any clue on what could be wrong?

The "Send Mail As" is a very welcome update. The only thing I am waiting for to switch from IMAP to Exchange (Google Sync) is when Google adds a toggle to the Exchange option so you can change Delete from "archiving a message" to actually, yes as obvious as it is, DELETING A MESSAGE!!

IMAP works by default to actually "delete" a message and the "Gmail" option under the Mail types gives you the option to turn the "archive to delete" option off.

It would be so great if this option could be available for the Exchange type gmail account.
