Automatic mobile rendering for Google Sites

Thursday, June 23, 2011

(Cross-posted from the Docs Blog.)

As the dramatic growth of the mobile web changes the way people consume content, it’s becoming increasingly important for publishers to provide a good mobile experience. With this in mind, we just added automatic mobile rendering in Google Sites for iOS 3.0+ and Android 2.2+ devices, and a mobile version of the Google Sites lists.

By going to General settings under More actions > Manage site and clicking on Automatically adjust site for mobile phones, your Google site will be automatically adjusted whenever it’s viewed from an iOS or Android 2.2+ device:

BeforeAfter

The most noticeable automatic adjustments include:
  • Aligning the header layout and top bar
  • Fitting the width of the site to match the device’s width
  • Smart handling of sidebars, horizontal navigation, and dropdown links
After you’ve enabled this feature, you can preview the page from your computer as a mobile viewer using More actions > Preview as viewer then select Mobile from the yellow Preview page as viewer (Mobile | Desktop) box at the top of the page.

You can also choose to hide some of the links in your site’s footer to save vertical space.
After you’ve enabled this feature, you can preview the page from your c
omputer as a mobile viewer using More actions > Preview as viewer then select Mobile from the yellow Preview page as viewer (Mobile | Desktop) box at the top of the page.

It’s also important for you to be able to access and search your own sites on the go, which is why we’ve also added mobile versions of the site list, sites search, and browse sites categories.

Just navigate to http://sites.google.com from any iOS 3.0+ or Android 2.2+ device for quick access to your sites.

As more people unplug from their desks and interact with content on the go, new doors are opening for everyone. We hope these tools will empower you to meet the challenges of publishing in a mobile world using Google Sites.

How does this work with Wordpress? I'm a little confused. I have GoDaddy as a host but my email at my domain is hosted through Google ...

So why does it require Android v2.2 or above?

When will this be working? I enabled it on my blog and ONLY the first portion when you select the option to make it compatible for mobile sites works. The option to change the footer doesn't even come up for More actions > Preview as viewer (Mobile). And where is your team getting "More Actions" it is just under the "General" section. There is nothing that says More actions.

Just set it up for a couple of my sites. Still needs work! Doesn't do a good job of rendering multi-column pages. Also Doesn't render tables well (Though I can see how that could be difficult). But they can tray to stack the content in multi column pages (e.g. from left to right to Up and down).

I'm viewing the site in an iphone. If anyone cares to see, this is my site - hmnabavian.com

Thanks for this, we've been hoping for something along these lines for a while to align with other mobile optimisation work we're doing.

One point to note however is that this mobile approach currently doesn't work well with sites that have column-based layouts - are you going to provide more options there or stack each column in turn, in the short term?

The reason this is important is that our institution has a launch page for the Google Apps tools as recommended by Google and having just tested this, I've had to revert until the column layout is addressed.

A good move though! Thanks :-)

Been using it for a few hours of browsing. Initially, I like what I'm seeing. The rendering is similar to the more refined "front end" applications for mobile sites. I'd sure like to lean away from needing apps for so many websites... The speed of loading mobile sites rendered this way might be the answer.
