Editor’s note: Last year we launched an improvement that makes over 60 additional Google services available to Google Apps users. This series showcases what’s new and how your organization can benefit.
Welcome to User Managed Storage
As more and more people discover the power and flexibility of creating and collaborating using nothing but the web, an increasing volume of user content is stored in the cloud. As part of our effort to support our users’ move into the cloud, we’re pleased to announce that over the next couple of days we will be making User Managed Storage available to Google Apps customers.
User Managed Storage is a service that has allowed users to purchase more storage space when they fill the allotted quota on their personal Google Accounts. Over the next couple of days, we will be rolling this service out for users of Google Apps accounts as well, allowing the purchase of extra storage for Google Docs, Picasa Web Albums, and photos from Blogger. Any of these products that is over its storage quota can use the extra storage on a first-come, first-served basis. Users that upload lots of files to Google Docs, sync their Office documents to the cloud using Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office, or store and share pictures using Picasa or Blogger can now expand the storage space available for these files.
Pricing for this service is the same as for personal Google Accounts:
| Plan | Price |
| 20 GB | $5 USD per year |
| 80 GB | $20 USD per year |
| 200 GB | $50 USD per year |
| 400 GB | $100 USD per year |
| 1 TB | $256 USD per year |
| 2 TB | $512 USD per year |
| 4 TB | $1,024 USD per year |
| 8 TB | $2,048 USD per year |
| 16 TB | $4,096 USD per year |
The User Managed Storage service is enabled or disabled by the domain administrator, and the end user purchases additional storage using his or her Google Checkout account. Additional storage added using User Managed Storage cannot be pooled or transferred to another Google Apps user account and cannot be used for Gmail.
Data stored using User Managed Storage is subject to the same ownership policy as other data in the Google Apps account.
Learn more and get started
User Managed Storage can be enabled by your domain administrator from the Google Apps Control Panel at https://www.google.com/a/[your_domain.com] (replace [your_domain.com] with your actual domain name). Note that the Google Checkout service must also be enabled to allow end users to purchase additional storage. If your organization isn’t using Google Apps yet, you can learn more and sign up today at http://www.google.com/apps/more.
For more information please take a look at our Help Center.
We continue to work to enable Google Apps users to be more productive using nothing but the web. Sign up to be notified when additional storage features become available.
Note: User Managed Storage may not be available in all areas. A Google Checkout account is required to purchase User Managed Storage and Google Checkout must be enabled by the domain administrator.

Hi, do you have plans to extend this to mail in Google Apps?
Man I just spent $5.00 for the additional gmail space because I could not increase my GApp space!!!
OK, I will spend another 5 bucks, worth it.
I've already seen the possibility to by some additional space, but it was probably for non-GApps users. So good to hear it's going to Google Apps as well. Just wondering, why the space can't be usd for Gmail? As I remember the paid space for non-Apps user can be shared also with gmail...
FINALLY. This is great news.
Now hoping that a new option could be add in a near future: Shared Managed Storage. A way to buy storage for the whole organization instead of buying just individual/user managed storage quota.
Most organizations would prefer this way.
Thanks.
Would be nice if the storage can be used for GMail as well.
How does this work if you are a reseller with clients in your reseller portal who need additional storage in Google Docs or Google Sites?
Please advise.
Why can't it be used for gmail? I'm desperate for it on a couple accounts. I have the edu edition and I'm willing to pay for more.
This is fantastic. Of course, when will administrator managed storage be available and will it also have the same (or a similar) pricing structure?
not valid in Gmail?
too bad.
I switched from a gmail account to a google apps (free edition), and it's just for personal use, but I wanted a domain (to look more professiona).
It's too bad gmail and google apps free are not treated equally, just because you want to charge the business users.
Why is this storage space not shared with gmail?
In your end personal / Gmail accounts, the end user is able to use this space for their gmail account as well.
I have a user who is approaching the 25 GB threshold and this would be the easiest method of dealing with this obstetrical.. Buying additional space.
Is there a way to setup a common / shared file space for apps for edu?
If so, is there a way to buy additional space for that?
Why can't extra storage be used for gmail? I presume this also means google apps mail? I'm getting close to my 25gb limit and I can't believe google still doesn't have an option to expand the mailbox if I'm prepared to pay. What happened to the 'never delete anything' mantra?
So would the purchase of additional space allow one to submit a Google Doc > 1024 Mb? It would be good if it did. If one is paying for the space, then it shouldn't matter the size of individual files.
Google Apps for Education customers need the option to purchase additional storage for e-mail. E-mail is excluded from this program.
Are there plans to offer additional storage for e-mail to Apps for Education customers?
Cool. When will we be able to purchase more Gmail space for Google Apps for Education? We're in desperate need...
Is there a way to up email quota for one user without Business/Education?
awesome!!! Now we can use our HR docs account for all our files :) thanks for making the pricing the same for Apps as gmail!!!
-Dan
Woot! Maybe this will spur DropBox to up the ante. I know a lot of video editors, myself included, that would love having more cloud storage.
Another vote for needing more space for gmail on Google Apps. Please, please, please!
I just paid 5 bucks and... my e-mail quota is still at 99% used... no changes at all... what happened?
I want more storage for Gmail. Let me give you more money.
I've been using the extra space for over a year now in anticipation of something like cloud-based apps. Having received my CR-48 over a month ago, it's starting to pay off. $5 for 20GB is an excellent price.
Thanks! This is a very welcomed update! ;)
I would also like to purchase more Gmail storage for my Google Apps free account. An alternative for me right now is going Pro, but then all my domain user have to go Pro. I'd pay $50 for one user (me) but multiplying that by even only two becomes too expensive... And I'll hit the 25GB wall in a couple of years anyway.
I echo this: Please invest in what your users want!
FINALLY. This is great news.
Now hoping that a new option could be add in a near future: Shared Managed Storage. A way to buy storage for the whole organization instead of buying just individual/user managed storage quota.
Most organizations would prefer this way.
Thanks.
Please enable it for Google Apps email.
We really need to be able to purchase additional space for our entire organization, not just individual users. Please add this option and evaluate used storage in aggregate. This is a MUST for business users who collaborate.
How do you increase space for mail in google apps, obviously this is a major concern for businesses. If email has a hard stop at 25GB this isnt a scalable solution for any business. As the other user mentioned what happened to the "never delete anything" mantra????
Thanks and appreciation for the wonderful service that Google provides for our Non-Profit agency. We are needing additional space on our email accounts. I'm hoping this will be available soon!
-Jim
I need to increase the size of some Premier mailboxes to greater than 25GB - and this does not seem to help.
When will the ability to have increased mailbox sizes be available?
What apps if the domain admin removes/disables the account? Who "owns" this now paid-for storage?
We made a mistake! Bought USD$70 thinking that we can use the extra space in gmail. :( So bad!
Please enable this for Google Apps email accounts too! I am a web developer / hosting company and use google apps exclusively for my email provisions on all my websites and domains. This is needed very badly.
add dropbox functionality
bump: Need Shared Managed Storage
This is just nonsense that google Apps requires individual employees in a business to buy their own additional storage.
This is just creating more of a problem and is not a solution for a business. How can the administrator manage this? What happens when an employee leaves?
Come on Google we need proper centralized tools to manage storage across all accounts in the enterprise with the ability to specify limits on each account, and to also allocate common shared storage for all
Another vote for an extra storage purchase option for gmail for Google Apps Premier users.
Google, could you at least weigh in with what the issue is for you?
Also, leaving an explanatory stub or URL reference when you remove help pages is courteous and creates a lot of good will.
We only need this for email. Please include this option for gmail in Google Apps EDU. Some of our professors have far more than 8GB of mail they wish to migrate across. We would gladly pay for this individual service.
Please make this storage bought available to my mail at Google Apps. Why limit it to THE picasa and docs storage... I have pais 5 bucks to find it does not solve mail storage problem........
Please fix this.
I WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE THIS...
until...
I got to this line:
"... and cannot be used for Gmail."
HUH?
That's all I need it for! Desperately! For all of my clients on Google Apps whose mailboxes are BURSTING!
PLEASE.
FIX THIS.
It sucks that regular users of free Gmail can get as much space as they want to pay for... but "premium" users are getting the shaft.
PLEASE FIX THIS.
I am personally responsible for moving my entire school to Google Apps email and I'm really feeling a lot of heat from key-staff members that are desperately trying to stay under the <8 GB email storage.
Now after delaying this extra storage feature for months you give us a solution that doesn't work for email and don't give any indication of what you're doing about it!?!
I'm feeling more than a little betrayed by you.
Like that other guy said: What happened to the "Never delete anything" mantra?
we all long for this on google apps MAIL storage.
I spent $5,00 thinking that was avaliable for mail.
Just now I read "... and cannot be used for Gmail."
We need to be able to purchase additional space for our entire organization, not just individual users. This is a MUST for the apps administrator to manage storage in a controlled fashion for a business.
Google Product Management:
1. Absurd that Manage Storage cannot be deployed for Gmail in Google Apps. All your clients are screaming for this. Priority 10/10
2. Absurd that each individual user of a Google Apps account should activate Managed Storage, what's "managed" about that? Listen to your clients: they all scream for managed storage within one Google Apps account that can be deployed by the administrator over the various users. Priority 9/10
3. Dropbox functionality. Priority 7/10
Just wonderful, Google. Why did we switch from Lotus Notes to this when we cannot even PAY GOOGLE to purchase more Gmail storage for our google apps domain?! Google, it is essential that schools and non-profits be able to purchase more gmail storage!
Everbody, think twice before using Google App for Education until you can purchase more e-mail storage. Nothing is free..
Absurd that Manage Storage cannot be deployed for Gmail in Google Apps. All your clients are screaming for this. Priority 10/10
Painful, how about lumping storage for gmail, docs, sites etc into one bowl per user? Then you can buy more space that can be used within all the apps.
I remember when Google did awesome things and things that made sense.
"Never delete anything"... I reached 24gbs yesterday.. I am running out very quickly, Please allow for more space to be purchased... Free Gmail users can and that makes me feel like just forwarding over all emails to gmail and completely circumventing my Google Apps acct that I was so happy to create. Now its just a forwarding tool. Come on Google release the space!
I wonder if they need to work through all the Google Apps transitions before they can make things like managing shared storage across a domain happen. They really need this right now. Microsoft 365 is offering 25GB to non-profits. Come on Google!
We need the ability to increase the space in our Google Apps Gmail Accounts as well. Mine is at 25% capacity and that is just from saving important PDF e-mails each PDF being only around 50kb. I am willing to pay for more storage but you need to provide the option! I really hope you're listening to all of these comments!
The transition from Google Apps to making it work like a real Google account is also the worst idea you guys have ever had. I liked being in my business e-mail and my personal e-mail account at the same time, they didn't interfere with each other like they do now. I liked the fact that I could be logged into my business google apps account and log into other google services without it interfering. Now there is no division between work and play and my work Google Apps account is tracking data I don't want it to have.
another $5 mistake. It wasn't obvious that the additional storage was for Docs and Picasa either. I don't even use Picasa!
Please, let me buy more email storage!
Google - start listening to your customers. They are screaming out for more gmail storage.
I myself moved to google apps to make use of my domain, only to find out it is more crippled than the regular gmail account i migrated from.
Another (paying) Google Business email account user.. wanting to buy more storage!
As always, Google never listen
Please make it so that administrator doesn't have to explicitly enable purchasing additional storage.
Whenever I'm trying to purchase (on Google Apps), it takes me to "This service is not available" page, but administrator doesn't have any clue to enable!
It seems absolutely useless to be not able to buy additional storage space for Email for Google Apps Standard.
Its completely Google Apps marketing strategy to make people move to their paid version to get a maximum of 25 GB.
Google better start listening to its users.
Please provide an option to buy storage for Google Apps mail. I am ready to pay for it and many in this post are ready as well. I am a user of Google App Standard and have many accounts in our organization. Only one account (mine) is close to the free limit. Other are years from reaching the limit. So I would not like to spend USD500.- per year for a service which will cost me USD5.- only. I also have almost 600 filters and a complex structure of labels in this Google App account. I am having to move all these to my personal gmail account and recreate the labels, filters, etc... Please save me all this effort and give me an option to buy storage for Google Apps email.
Google Message Discovery allows for archiving and message discovery compliance.

Somewhat ludicrous how hard it is to find the information on it, though.
Anyone from google want to chime in here?
Does anyone know if google is selling extra storage for apps standard??? I have been waiting for this over a year now, trying different things to avoid email interruption. I am tired of this. If they come up with a solution similar to regular gmail, I am going to cancel and move to other email solutions....
So a with a free Gmail account you can pay up and get 80GB space ( yes for GMAIL). And with my paid APPS account I can not go beyond 25 GB (over 80% filled now). If it can not be done, at least I want to understand why.....
I can not find the logic nor an answer. Anyone any idea ?
Anyone found a workable solution?
How is one supposed to buy more gmail space?? I have almost used up my 8free gb ??help
Please allow Google Apps for Business users purchase more space for mail.
Hi there,
I would like to buy some space for Google apps emails eather. It's a must. Is there any date we could do that?
The second question, how can I, as an GApps reseller, buy storage quota in behalf of customer? I can't see any option how to do that.
Thank you for any answer.
We are Premier users. We have users going reaching gmail storage quota limits. How can we buy more?
Some users using Outlook with .pst files around 20Gb want to move everything to google and stop using Outlook. We need options to buy extra gmail storage for them.
If google doesn't offer a solution. What about to create gmail.com accounts and move part of the storage there? it can not be sent from that account but it'll be in the cloud and searched.
ADD MORE SPACE FOR EMAIL!
I echo this "Now hoping that a new option could be add in a near future: Shared Managed Storage. A way to buy storage for the whole organization instead of buying just individual/user managed storage quota.
Most organizations would prefer this way."
I have two accounts. One free account (...@gmail.com) where I have 80 GB of space (bought additional space on the free 7GB).
I also have a Google APPS account ( name@mydomain.com) for which I pay U$50 a year. It is 25 GB and there is no way I can expand that to let's say 50 GB.
I agree with everybody above that it should be possible to buy more space. There must be a reason why this is not possible. Anyone ?
(I have 70.479 e-mails (business mail since 2005) and my 50GB box is now 81 % full. It was Google who stated 'Search, don't sort' so why should I sort and decide what to throw away...?)
So... if if i buy 20 gigs of storage and place files there as a backup and my account lapses for a day, week or month, what happens to my files? Are they immediately forfeit and gone? I can't find the documentation outlining the policies with regards to this. Is there a grace period?
+1 for e-mail storage increase. One use is AT the limit now and the BOSS is about 2 months from hitting it!
