A while back, we launched email delegation for customers using Google Apps for Business. Today, we're happy to bring this highly-requested feature to Google Apps and Google Apps for Education customers as well. As more universities migrate their faculty and staff to Google Apps, this feature will be particularly useful to schools as it allows administrative support staff to screen and send email on behalf of others who assign them as delegates. To enable this feature for your domain, select the Mail Delegation checkbox under Email Settings in the control panel.
With businesses and schools continuing the rapid move to the cloud, we are committed to continually releasing features like this that help streamline migration and constantly enrich the Google Apps experience.

Unfortunately, it still appears impossible to delegate access to contacts without delegating access to email. This is a serious deficiency in functionality.
Agreed. I would really like a shared contacts for users in a domain. It is important for all of my accounts to be looking at the same set of contacts instead of having to duplicate each time.
Yikes... I was really excited about this, but then I read Cliff's comment.
Simply allowing for delegation of emails to remove them from your inbox, but assign & forward them to another account (maybe also allowing you to track the progress of action being taken on each message) who would then be responsible for taking action or archiving the message.
Just my .02 :)
Will you give example to clarify this "this feature will be particularly useful to schools as it allows administrative support staff to screen and send email on behalf of others who assign them as delegates. To enable this feature for your domain, select the Mail Delegation checkbox under Email Settings in the control panel." it is not clear how an individual like me can screen and send email on their behalf who assign me as delegates. please show examples in education and business .
Hi
There seems to be a limit (10 I think) on how many people can see share one inbox - is there a setting where I can increase this number?
One major feature still missing from the administrator console is management of the ACL of a mailbox.
The domain admin should be able to add and remove user access to a mailbox. As does every other email system.
If the CEO wants to access a mailbox the domain admin should be able to grant him access.... he should not have to request the user to delegate him access.... who pays the bills around here!!
Unhappily, it only allow to grant access to accounts in the same domain. I would like to be able to grant access to my gmail account from my google apps account.
First, we are thrilled to have this feature. Second, ditto what Cliff said, we need accessibility to contacts without delegation of the entire email account.
Perfect timing! I'm migrating users in groups, and I just got to my first group last week that needed this feature and I was racking my brain trying to figure out an alternative and bracing for the backlash that alternative would generate from my users.
There still seems to be a completely unnecessary limit on the number of delegates you can have on one account though.
This functionnality has been reduced in Google Apps for business, now only 10 accounts can be delegated to the same people.
