Early adopters: transition to the new infrastructure for Google Apps accounts

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Back in May we shared details about a big change so Google Apps accounts can start accessing dozens of Google services beyond the core suite of messaging and collaboration apps. This change will let users access many new services such as Blogger, Reader, Google Voice and calling-in-Gmail (US only), Picasa Web Albums, AdWords and iGoogle from their Google Apps accounts. This big improvement addresses 9 of the top 20 requests from customers in one fell swoop, so we’re thrilled that the new infrastructure is now open for early adopters! After accounts are transitioned to the new infrastructure, these customers will be able to tap into much more innovation happening all across Google, helping people be even more productive with a broader range of tools in the cloud.

Why just for “early adopters” you ask? We’re still working on a few important features, but after extensive testing we’ve found that what’s ready today is already tremendously valuable to many Standard, Premier and Education Edition customers. Here’s the functionality that early adopters won’t see before the new infrastructure is feature-complete:
  • Administrators do not yet have the ability to turn off access to any of these additional services as they can today for applications in the core suite.
  • A few applications are not compatible with the new infrastructure at this time including Google Health, PowerMeter, YouTube, Web History, Buzz and Profiles.
You should also be aware of two other details not specific to early adopters: support limitations and “conflicting accounts”. Additional applications beyond the core suite are not covered by Google Enterprise support or the 99.9% uptime guarantee. However, many services have self-service online help resources, and a subset (such as AdWords) offer enhanced support options. Finally, a small fraction of Google Apps users have created personal Google Accounts based on their organization’s Google Apps email addresses. Users in this situation will need to rename these “conflicting accounts” during the transition process, and we’ll help these users make the necessary changes.

So...if you understand the limitations and would like to transition users to the new infrastructure, sign in to the control panel. If you use the control panel in English and meet our other early adopter eligibility criteria, you’ll start seeing a notification in your dashboard in the next few days where you can get started. You can begin with a handful of pilot users, and then transition your whole organization once you’ve had a chance to kick the tires.

If any of the current limitations are problematic for you, or if your organization isn’t eligible yet, hang tight and keep an eye out here for the next phase of our roll-out. We’re excited to help you move to the new infrastructure too, and we’ll be ready for you soon! For more information, please explore our Help Center documentation for administrators and for end-users.

Disappointing that organizations that use SAML single sign-on cant get in on this right now, but I guess it's understandable.

What if you've already signed up with your Google Apps email as a Google Account for these services? Will things get really, really confused if you enable this?

Argh. Tease! Maybe you could just sneak Picasa in there for everyone right now? Hmm? Yes? Yes? Please?

Thanks Google! The online workplace experience has made a tremendous step with iGoogle as your Portal, RSS reader for keeping up to date with all News, Blogger to create News, etc.

Does this mean Apps users in Canada will be able to use Google Voice?

This is absolutely fabulous! Can't wait to get it activated. Finally i can trash that confusing secondary account to connect to Picasaweb and use Reader. Hoooooooray!

I'm waiting for the change. Are you planning the posibility to migrate services from Google to Google App?

Please add Google Checkout to the list of services that can be used by Google Apps users.

How can we become an early adopter?

The rollout to Apps users is great, glad to finally have many Google services on my apps account. I really hope Google apps will be up to par with regular Google account in the near future.

For example, I'm pretty sure this is going to post under my regular Google account instead of my apps account.

Will this fix any of the problems Google Apps users have been having with Android when using our Google Apps account as our primary account?

So when can SAML SSO domains use these new features?

Fantastic news. Will there be a way to migrate or link services from existing @gmail.com accounts to Google Apps accounts? I'd love to move my gmail.com Reader shared/starred items, for instance, and use Reader from my Google Apps account.

Great changings. Can't wait to get these new Services in apps.

How can I signup for the early adopters program? I have Google Apps Standard, but there is no message in my dashboard. Can I set all my users to english from the dashboard?

Thank you for constantly improving Google Apps! How long after the sign-up might we expect to see the new control panel, as described above? Just trying to gauge...

Please, please, please,... May I be an early adopter....

Does this mean I can't sign into Gmail and my work Google apps mail at the same time?

Richard said...

I transitioned over my account first (admin) just to see what it feels like and it lasted all of 5 minutes and I've reverted back. Not being able to have my Apps and Gmail accounts open at the same time in one browser (tabs) is a big deal breaker for me. Not looking forward to the forced transition in the fall (hopefully in 2050). Please fix this before you do it Google!

Picasa is working with my Google Apps account. Great!

Now if only we had Buzz...

One annoying change is that users can no longer be signed into a personal Gmail account and Google Apps account at the same time. At work,I like to keep my personal account open in a tab next to my work/apps tab. Now I have to sign out/sign in to check one or the other.

This is a MESS. Max, don't do it. I wish I hadn't! :( Now, I must log out of YouTube to access my former Google Apps mail. Why can't our former Google Apps stuff be truly integrated with our Google accounts? This is just a mess, makes me rethink my Google fangirl status.

Kimberley said...

@SRW, you can export your Google Reader subscriptions from your one account and import them into another. But YouTube is FUBAR. :(

I have the message in the dashboard, but Google Reader is the only new service available.

Chris "TheChrisD" Daly said...

Glad to see that the early adopter option is available now, now finally my Mail, Docs and Calendar can be on the same single sign-in account as my Reader.

Although as a very heavy YouTube user, the lack of support for transitioned accounts is actually outweighing all the benefits of transitioning. :(

I'm glad everyone is so excited but it is a real pain.

I still want to maintain my Gmail and my Google Apps email in spearate accounts and in separate tabs.

When I sign into Gmail, it signs me out of Apps mail. When I sign into Apps mail, it logs me out of Gmail.

Didn't anyone test this out before taking it live?

How do I get out of this?

Paul said...

You can easily sign into both your Google account and your Google Apps account by turning on multiple sign-on.

Can't see the migration message when logging in... even though everything seems to be in line with the eligibility criteria.

Is this a phased migration?

Patrick said...

Unfortunately I don't see the migration message. Which countries are covered?
I went through the early adopter eligibility criteria. I think I meet them all. How and where can I check if there still criteria that I don't meet.

Regards,
Patrick

How about the ability to buy storage for a Google Apps account? A major issue for a small org such as myself.

Sharon said...

Also waiting very anxiously for a migration message. Teachers are biting at the bit.
Does anyone have a real date on this for general users?

Having a problem setting up a classroom of student Blog accounts. The accounts have been transitioned, create a Blog account but when going to create a blog it requires verification via mobile phone. I used my cell phone but it reached it's limit after 4 or so accounts. Now we are stuck.

Possible solution to the question of getting "One or more of your accounts cannot be transitioned at this time"
